"The form"

- Koichi Futatsumata has been releasing a number of collections from E&Y.
Each of his designs has a different "form¡É but all of them have a distinctly Futatsumata-like quality. In conjunction with the exhibition "Digging through E&Y Vol.2: Koichi Futatsumata" at ATAKA, we asked him to talk about his interest in "form" and the process of designing.

I am interested in "form" that is born from function.

To be more precise, I am looking for the beauty of form beyond function, and at the same time, I am looking for the function beyond form.

Such a search for "form" always begins with a sketch. While running the pen through my mind, I repeatedly assemble and disassemble the various forms in my head and move my hand through them. In the process of doing so, there is a moment when I suddenly encounter a "form" that catches my interest. Then, while integrating structure, detail, texture, and so on, I repeatedly go back and forth between my mind and sketches to follow the clearer outlines of my interest. For me, "shaping" and designing is in this sense.

"4FB" (coat hanger, 2007), my first collaboration with E&Y, is the simplest of all the products we have released. We delved into our interest in this while considering the thickness of the bars and the overall form of the product to ensure that it would stand on its own as a coat hanger and be able to withstand the load. The simple structure of flat bars of the same form assembled on a cube-formed shaft makes it easy for anyone to assemble, and allowing for lean packing.

"HAMMOCK" (low table, 2009) was born from an interest in the combination of two qualities, organic and linear lines, as opposed to 4FB, which was inspired by structure and form. And it was not just a two-dimensional combination of straight and curved lines, but also a combination of two contrasting materials: glass and rattan. The rattan tray, with its pleasant curvaceous beauty like a hammock, is superimposed on glass, a linear material with a certain tension. As we think beyond the showcase or window, we are more conscious of the presence through the glass. The contrast between the conceptual aspects of such objects and the contrast between materials and forms is incorporated into a single product.

On the other hand, "ESKER" (chair, 2022), the newest of the released products, could be described as a "form" that incorporates two elements, straight and curved lines, in a more three-dimensional way and at a finer level. In this product, the joints and frame surfaces are smoothed and smoothed with the idea of a simple and light stacking chair in mind. And by consistently manipulating the seat, including its bulge, we were able to achieve a unified form, both visually and physically, from the frame to the seat.

And "GO" (stool, 2021), designed as a stool for putting on shoes, and "â8" (object, 2022), designed as an object for setting plants, may have something in common in that both are curiosities in form that arise from a clear function. Furthermore, both are explorations of "form" created by combining multiple functions.

"GO" has three main functions: a seat for putting on and taking off shoes, a footrest for tying laces or brushing while wearing shoes, and a storage space for small items such as brushes, cream, and shoehorns for cleaning. The "â8" is a combination of three main functions: a footstool for tying and brushing shoes, a footstool for cleaning brushes, cream, and shoehorns, and a storage space for small items such as shoehorns. On the other hand, "â8" is based on the premise of incorporating an existing standard No.8 pot, and integrates three elements: a cylindrical part to hold the pot, a cone-formed removable tray to catch excess water after watering, and three flat plates to add the function of a side table. Like "GO" ,these three elements were integrated to form a single object with a sense of presence. What both products have in common is that they are "forms" that combine multiple functions, and as a result, it can be said that they are products that seek a stronger personality and identity as furniture.

Looking back, I feel that "form" for me is an expression of my various interests, concerns, and curiosity about modeling. And working with E&Y gives me the opportunity to reaffirm this through the design of products. July 2023 at CASE-REAL's Fukuoka office
